The EIFI Seminar Series

From 2018 ....

The EIFI Seminars start with a training cycle dedicated to the three central axes of the School: Philosophy, Spirituality, Society. The central theme of the five seminars in 2019 is Europe's dialogue with its diversity. Identity issues are addressed in order to discuss prospects for coexistence in an intercultural Europe, reconfigured from its regions.

In 2020, the Seminars join the research project initiated at the 13th International Congress of Intercultural Philosophy in Medellin on the theme of "Affectivity, Knowledge and the Human Soul".

The EIFI seminar series in 2020:

Affectivity, knowledge, human soul

Faced with the challenge of new technologies, especially with their transhumanist and/or "post-humanist" project, this cycle of EIFI seminars wants to invite us to reflect on the need to bet on the humanity of the human being.

Affectivity, knowledge, human soul. Ignatian contributions.

Unlike other opportunities, and due to the health situation that prevents the transfer between countries and cities, the meeting could not take place in person in the city of Barcelona, as was customary, but was held via an online platform.

Professors Juan Juan Antonio Senent de Frutos, Ignacio Sepúlveda del Río and Maria Del Pilar Pena Búa, from the Loyola University of Andalusia, Seville, encouraged reflection and dialogue on these concepts from the Ignatian tradition.

Affectivity and knowledge from María Zambrano

Due to the pandemic situation we are going through, it was not possible to hold the final seminar of the Eifi cycle for 2020 as planned. But fortunately we were able to offer the central lecture of that seminar online, thanks to the generosity of Professor Juana Sánchez-Gey.

Below is a summary of her lecture. This summary was written by our member in Honduras, Dr. José Manuel Fajardo Salinas, to whom we are very grateful.

Christian philosophy and popular religiosity

The 2021 seminar series opens with an online meeting with Inigo Bocken, professor of mystical theology at the Catholic University of Lovania and academic director of the Titus Brandsma Institute for the study of mysticism at the Radboud University Nijmegen, and Feike de Jong, urban scholar, philosopher and member of the Titus Brandsma Institute, who has devoted the last 14 years to the study of the peripheries of Mexican cities.

The central intention of this meeting is to discuss how philosophy can respond to growing trends of nationalism and populism.

This EIFI 2021 seminar series also includes two online seminars focusing on the current situation in Latin America:

28 August: 2016-2021: Between the coup, Christofacism and necropolitics. In this seminar organised by Dr. Nivia Ivette Núñez de la Paz, Universidad UNINI/Puerto Rico, with presentations by Dr. Claudete Beise Ulrich, Facultade UNIDA/Brazil, Dr. Marga Janete Ströher, Facultade SINAL/Brazil, and Dr. Nivia Ivette Núñez de la Paz, offers a socio-theological-feminist analysis of that period, bringing as key concepts for dialogue: sorority, Christofacism and necropolitics.

9 October: Violence, pandemic and governability in Colombia. This seminar, organised and moderated by Dr. Myriam A. Zapata Jiménez and the Observatory of Public, Social and Educational Policies, OPSE-Faculty of Education Sciences, Universidad de La Salle, Colombia, included presentations by Dr. Efrén Danilo Ariza Ruiz, Universidad del Área Andina, Dr. Alfredo Gómez-Muller, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, and Dr. Diego Jaramillo Salgado, Universidad del Cauca.

On 18 December, this cycle of EIFI seminars concluded with a seminar on the theme "X-ray of a pandemic", in order to contrast ourselves on the basis of the question "What changes has the global situation of Covid19 changed?" and to investigate the personal dimension and the social impact of twenty months of pandemic.

International Congresses of Intercultural Philosophy

In Dialogue with the Cultural Diversity of Humanity

This series of philosophical congresses founded and coordinated by Raúl Fornet-Betancourt continues since the first congress in 1995 in Mexico City in the rhythm of two years. The central intention is to transform philosophy into a dialogue with the cultural diversity of humanity, and thus to lay the foundation for a more just and supportive coexistence in cultural diversity.

These congresses have been organised in different local contexts in Latin America (Mexico City, 1995; São Leopoldo, Brazil, 1997; Buenos Aires, 2007; San José de Costa Rica, 2011; Santo Domingo, 2015, Medellín 2019), in Asia (Bangalore, 2001; Seoul, 2009), and in Europe (Aachen, 1999; Seville, 2003; Senftenberg, 2005; Vienna, 2013; Barcelona, 2018; Aachen 2022).

The central themes of the conferences include: cultures of philosophy, interaction and asymmetries between cultures in the context of globalisation; conceptions of the human being and interculturality; universality and cultural justice.

This series of conferences is in addition to the research project on "Justice, knowledge, spirituality", with the thematic focus:

International Seminars of the North-South Dialogue Program

Promoting plural coexistence in a common world

Since the first seminar in 1989 in Freiburg i. Br. (Germany), the interdisciplinary seminars, initiated and coordinated by Raul Fornet-Betancourt, have been organised every two years. In the change of meeting places, intercultural exchange continually opens up to new contextual life-worlds and makes them centres of debate on the great questions of humanity.

These seminars have been organised in different contextual places in Latin America (Mexico, 1991, 2002 and 2014; Brazil, 1993 and 2010; San Salvador, 1998), in Asia (India, 2007); and in Europe (Germany, 1989, 1992, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2011; 2019; Spain, 2004, 2008, 2013 and 2017).

From a philosophical exchange between the ethics of discourse and the ethics of liberation/philosophy of liberation, this dialogue programme has been dedicated since the 1980s to social challenges: poverty, human rights, democracy in cultures, globalisation, justice and solidarity, and the encounter between cultures of knowledge and wisdom.

This series of conferences is in addition to the research project on "Justice, knowledge, spirituality", with the thematic focus:
