Changing the World Needs Discourses: South-South and

North-South Dialogue

The experience gained at the “First Germano-Ibero-American Ethics Days” in Buenos Aires in 1985 led to a philosophical dialogue programme between North and South, which has taken place every two years since the first seminar in Freiburg i. Br. in 1989. Its core concern is the promotion of philosophical dialogue.

In a first phase (1989–1994), the discussion will

focus on the exchange between Latin American

philosophy of liberation (Enrique Dussel) and

German ethics of discourse (Karl Otto Apel).

Dealing with the plurality of ethical models,

philosophical approaches and forms of

rationality promotes a deepening of dialogue.

Above all, it contributes

  • to rethink the relationship

between theory and praxis

  • decenter one's ways of thinking

  • establish an intercultural

and interdisciplinary dialogue

The Vth International Seminar of the North-South Dialogue Programme consolidates a turnaround in 1995: Philosophy enters into an equal exchange with other disciplines in order to work out solutions for the great questions of mankind and aims to bring them into the public discussion.

In this second phase (1995–2013), the urgent challenges of our time come to the fore:

  • Poverty
  • Human Rights
  • Democracy in Cultures
  • Globalization
  • Justice and Solidarity
  • Encounter of Knowledge Cultures
  • Everyday Life and Cultural Diversity

This methodological reorientation determines the further development of the Dialogue Programme, which opens up to a variety of regional contexts and deepens cooperation with institutional decision-makers from politics and society.

NEW ACCENTS IN THE DIALOGUE PROGRAMME

The XVIIth International Seminar of the North-South Dialogue Programme

From 14–18 July 2014, the XVIIth International Seminar of the North-South Dialogue Programme takes place at the CIDECI Unit of Chiapas in Memoriam Don Luis Villoro.

Theme is: Justice, Knowledge and Spirituality.

This seminar examines the consequences of modern scientific epistemology aiming to point out possible ways for the development of knowledge that promotes the development of just and solidary coexistence.

This joint work has resulted in a long-term, intercontinental research project on the framework theme of “Justice, Knowledge and Spirituality”, initiated and coordinated by Raúl Fornet-Betancourt. The goal is to clarify to what extent we can orient ourselves today on spiritual traditions while we fight for social and epistemological justice.

Continental working groups are being set up to continue working on this topic and to contribute their findings to the overall project.
